My review of Sungmoon Kim’s Confucian Constitutionalism: Dignity, Rights, and Democracy (OUP, 2023) is now accessible online in Ethics. The book is the first attempt to articulate a comprehensive Confucian democratic constitutional theory.
Confucian Constitutionalism: Dignity, Rights, and Democracy matters beyond the academic space. Given the current context in South Korea (interestingly, also the author’s birthplace), where opposition forces are countering a significant shift toward authoritarianism by invoking constitutional principles, the book’s insights cannot be more timely and relevant.
